How ALPS Is Helping Stabilise the US Grid - One Curtailment at a Time
From December 2024 through March 2025, ALPS participated in curtailment operations at its Iowa facility under the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) Demand Response Resource (DRR) Type 1 programme - one of the most concrete examples yet of how Bitcoin mining infrastructure can actively support power grid stability.
The MISO DRR Type 1 programme enables large industrial energy consumers to voluntarily reduce their load when the operator calls for it, contributing directly to system reliability at moments of peak stress. During a significant winter storm this past season, ALPS temporarily reduced operations at its Iowa sites in response to such a call - a rapid, coordinated curtailment that helped balance the grid during one of the most demanding periods of the year.
Iowa's energy system is characterised by a high penetration of wind generation - a source that is clean and abundant but inherently variable. As wind output fluctuates, grid operators need flexible consumers capable of absorbing or releasing load on short notice. Very few large-scale industrial facilities can respond in real time. Bitcoin mining infrastructure can.
ALPS's mining systems are designed to adjust power consumption dynamically. When the economics of mining shift - or when a grid operator issues a curtailment request - operations can be scaled down within minutes. This flexibility is not a side effect; it is a structural feature of how ALPS designs and operates its facilities. It transforms a traditionally passive energy consumer into an active grid resource.
This is not an isolated gesture.
